SHOPMOBILITY STOCKPORT
Making life easier . ![]() Our scooters, wheelchairs and sighted guides will take you to the shops, the market, the visitor attractions or wherever you want to go in and around Stockport. We enable people with mobility or visual impairments to get round Stockport. If you cannot walk very far, we have scooters and wheelchairs you can use. "I have never driven one of those scooters" They are very easy to drive. We will show you how to use one, and once you are confident and competent, off you go. We may be able to provide an escort but only for half an hour on your first outing. If you would rather use a power chair or wheelchair, we have those as well. If you are using a wheelchair, you are responsible for providing your own carer to push you. It will only take a few minutes to show them how to use one. "My sight is not good" We have trained sighted guides who can guide you on foot or push you in a wheelchair. ![]() "What will it cost me?" You will need to join. Currently it costs £15 for life membership or £8 a year if you have a temporary mobility problem, or live outside the area and are not wanting to visit regularly. After that it is free. There is a £2 deposit, which you can choose to donate, when you borrow any equipment. Shopmobility Stockport is now a member of Heroes Welcome in Stockport. Serving armed forces personnel and veterans may have a free temporary membership (for one year) on production of ID. For just £7 you may upgrade to life membership if you do so before the end of 12 months. "I am a member of another Shopmobility scheme" As each scheme is independent, you will need to join each scheme you wish to use. "How do I go about joining?" To register as a member, we advise you to make an appointment and allow a minimum of 30 minutes to complete the paperwork and undergo training in the use of our equipment. You do not need to be registered with Social Services as disabled. We will need two proofs of your ID with your name and address e.g. recent (last 3 months) utility bill or bank statement. We will accept a current passport, current driving licence or current Blue Badge in place of one of the above. If you wish to use a scooter or power chair, and you have one of the following conditions we will need a letter from your doctor to say that you are fit to use powered equipment: EPILEPSY DIABETES controlled by insulin1 FITS OR BLACKOUTS POOR CONCENTRATION or EPISODES OF CONFUSION SEVERE WEAKNESS OR TIREDNESS IN THE UPPER LIMBS MENTAL IMPAIRMENT LEARNING DISABILITIES However if your doctor is likely to charge for this, we suggest you try out one of our vehicles first to see if they are right for you. "When are you open?" Monday to Saturday, 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. We do not open Bank Holidays or Sundays. "Where can I find you?" Level 2 of Merseyway Car Park. We have 4 of our own parking spaces at the side of the car parking attendants` cage. Parking anywhere in the car park is free for Blue Badge holders for up to three hours, and more disabled parking bays are located on level 2 at the rear of Westgate store. We can bring a scooter or wheelchair to where you are parked. "But I don`t drive or use a taxi" Not a problem, one of our uniformed staff or volunteers will meet you off the bus, train, or Ring and Ride. Let us know when you book the scooter (or wheelchair) and we will come and meet you at an agreed time and at a range of handy central locations: Stockport bus station Mersey Square (Northbound and Southbound bus stops) Mersey Square (Merseyway entrance) Grand Central (southbound bus stops) Taxi rank Merseyway public toilets Princes Street (bus stop) Egerton Arms (bus stop) Sainsbury`s ( bus stops) Asda cafι Primus Centre Stockport railway station. We can also meet you in one of the town centre car parks, but please be clear where you are. ![]() "Is it just for Stockport town centre?" No, you can take our scooters, wheelchairs or guides anywhere in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport as long as you have returned to the office by 5 pm. (Last Meet & Greet is 4.45 pm.) If you are using a sighted guide for visually impaired people, you can start or finish your journey anywhere in the area but you are responsible for your own transport. It is subject to the guide being willing and able to undertake the journey you have requested. Some of the guides are volunteers. We will do our best to get someone to assist you getting to where you want to go. "Can I borrow your equipment overnight?" Not if it is a scooter but we can let you have a manual wheelchair for up to 13 weeks. And you do not have to join. The cost is £3 a day/night and £15 a week, with a deposit of £100. Again we need 2 proofs of your ID with your name and address (or sight of current passport, current driving licence or current Blue Badge). Membership of Shopmobility Stockport entitles you to a reduced rate. To hire a wheelchair it is advisable to book. VISITING STEPPING HILL HOSPITAL? We have two scooters at the hospital for the free use of visitors and outpatients. They can be collected from the main (Poplar Grove) entrance Monday to Friday, 8.30 am 4.30 pm (subject to the availability of trained hospital volunteers). You will need to show your membership card. If you are not a member you may still use this service under escort by a hospital volunteer. DO YOU OWN YOUR OWN SCOOTER? We provide training leading to the Scooter User Proficiency Award. Most, if not all users, involved in the growing number of accidents on our roads and pavements in recent years driving mobility scooters probably thought they were good drivers. Even if you think you are perfectly safe, it is in your interest to have this training. Everyone who passes receives: Named certificate Sticker to go on the scooter Information pack containing details of Public liability insurance Breakdown and recovery service Registration with DVLA For a limited time it costs just £2 and tests can be booked for Wednesdays. Ring 0161 666 1100 to make a booking. 2010 GENERAL & LOCAL KNOWLEDGE QUIZ
This year`s quiz to raise funds for Shopmobility Stockport is now available from the office on Level 2 of Merseyway Car Park. It is free in return for a donation. The closing date is 5pm Saturday 18th September and the top two prizes have been donated by Staircase House and Grand Central Pools. If you would like to help sell the quiz in selected local shops over the summer, please get in touch with Geoff Latham on 0161 666 1101. ANNUAL QUESTIONNAIRE Thanks to all our members who took the trouble to complete and return this year`s annual questionnaire. Here are some of the comments you made: - Would like to thank all concerned for a great service. - Access to market now first class as is the library. - Find it a strain having to use lifts to get to and from shopping area would like there to be a ramp access. - Without a scooter I would not be able to shop in Stockport at all. - A lifesaver service ever since I joined as member no. 4. I was waiting for it to open so as to be able to get to an optician and choose new spectacles all those years ago. It gives me the freedom to be independent and choose my own food, look for household goods, i.e. new bed, microwave, and do confidential things like banking. I look forward to meeting staff and volunteers as they cheer you up. - Shopmobility is the best I would be lost without it. - I think we are wonderful it has certainly transformed my life, and I feel safer on our scooters than I do when using a couple of other Shopmobs. I think our Meet and Greet scheme far outshines any other Shopmobs that I have tried. - The only comment I want to add is thank you for providing this service. It is much appreciated. - Great job done by so few people for the amount of work and effort required to meet the requirements needed to keep this valuable service running. - Unfortunately I have not yet used the service as I very rarely get to Stockport and then it is to one place only and only for a short time, but I am sure that the service offered is very good and I look forward to using it in the future. INDEPENDENCE April 2010 The newsletter of SHOPMOBILITY STOCKPORT Registered Charity No 1060927 In this issue Annual General Meeting Where were you? Open Britain ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Tiviot Dale Church Thursday 24th June 2010 10.30am Scooters & wheelchairs available Sighted Guides available Please book in plenty of time. Registration starts at 10am Please arrange to be picked up for return journey by 12.30 Hello from the Chairperson It has been a long cold winter and for the first time in our history we had to close for three days due to the weather. The staff braved the cold conditions of our premises to keep the scooters in tip top condition to enable the service to operate for the brave souls who ventured out. They were always cheery and the Trustees are grateful to them for keeping you mobile. Your Treasurer has decided to call it a day after 7 years and will be retiring at the AGM. Pat has ensured we stay afloat through some lean times and with her sound advice and watchful eyes on the accounts we are surviving the recession extremely well. I personally will miss her assistance and support and wish to thank her, on your behalf, for her time which she has given so freely. We are seeking Trustees with the AGM approaching, so if you have the skills needed and want to be part of the management of Shopmobility Stockport please ask John for more information. Without Trustees we can`t form a Management Committee and without one there is no Shopmobility. Sadly, Arnold the Merseyway General Manager, who has been a huge supporter of us is leaving in June. He will be missed by us all at Shopmobility Stockport and we wish him well. Unfortunately, during the past couple of years, there have been several incidents involving members despite increased training. Most have been caused by user error - excessive speed in situations that require extremely low speed e.g. manoeuvring in shops, and not switching off when stationary. Please concentrate at all times and ensure you are well enough on the day to use a scooter. You will be aware of all the recent bad publicity in the papers regarding scooters being driven at high speeds etc and questioning the user`s capabilities - we don`t want you to become front page news. If you wish to receive extra training or undertake further practice please ask the staff. It`s better to be safe than sorry. Enjoy your outings, and above all, keep safe, we want to see you return. Janet Sutton Chairperson Letter from a member. On Thursday 25th June last year, I attended the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Shopmobility Stockport. It was a lovely day and I had a nice ride on a scooter from the Shopmobility office, along Merseyway and on to Tiviot Dale Methodist Church where our meeting was being held. I got there in good time, signed in and got my papers for the meeting, went into the room where it was being held and looked round. I was amazed to see that only a few of our members were there. During the course of the meeting your Chairperson, Janet Sutton, spoke about various matters appertaining to your Shopmobility. It was really interesting; there were no long-winded speeches, various important matters were voted on, members were proposed and seconded for roles on the Board of Trustees. The business side took only a very short time. We were entertained by children who were all under the age of 11 from St. Joseph`s school who sang so beautifully and we were all encouraged to join in and further entertainment was provided by the hand bell ringers from Marple. The meeting finished with refreshments (cakes, biscuits and hot and cold drinks) and a chat in an adjoining room. It was like going out for afternoon tea. All in all, an interesting and extremely pleasant couple of hours. So where were YOU? This was my first AGM as a Trustee of your/our Shopmobility Stockport and I was appalled that only 17 members attended (including myself and 3 other Trustees). I actually stood up and said that I found such apathy totally appalling, that out of over 1400 members only 17 could be bothered. That is less than the number of people who use the service each week. You may have noticed that I have used the term YOUR Shopmobility several times. Shopmobility Stockport is a registered charity, run by a small group of its members who are prepared to give up their time by becoming Trustees and serving on the Management Committee for YOU (of which I feel privileged to be a part of). As such, we have to follow strict rules and regulations set down by the Charity Commission as to how decisions are made and meetings are conducted and we are accountable to them. One really important rule is that we MUST hold an AGM each year and there MUST be a quorum of 15 members present at this meeting. Last year we just scraped through. If YOU can`t be bothered turning up for the annual meeting, then YOU run the risk of the charity (i.e. YOUR shopmobility) ceasing to exist. This is a fact, I can`t dress it up any other way, so please, please, please, make an effort and attend the next AGM on Thursday 24th June at the Tiviot Dale Methodist Church. The children from St Joseph`s school will entertain us once again. There is a free car park there, Ring and Ride will take you to the front door or you can take a scooter as I did to get you there (please book this well in advance). This is YOUR charity, run for YOUR benefit, and please remember that if we can`t hold an AGM due to lack of members attending, then it could very well be that we could no longer exist....and then how would YOU be able to shop, etc., independently? It is being held in the morning this year so that you can pop in whilst out and about on that day. It is your opportunity to have your say, so........ SEE YOU THERE THEN? I hope so. You can even get a free cuppa! Stephanie Ormerod (Queen of Bling) ![]() Have you decided where you are going for your holidays this year? Or perhaps you might be thinking of a day out now the days are getting longer and warmer? If you`re looking for ideas, you might like to consult the new Open Britain guide. Described as the definitive travel guide to accessible Britain it has been produced by RADAR, Tourism for All, DisabledGo and our own National Federation of Shopmobility UK to provide a one-stop shop` for the traveller with access needs looking for information on accessible accommodation, visitor attractions, places to eat and drink and service providers. The Manchester section is somewhat under-developed (and there are no entries for Stockport!) but hopefully Visit Manchester will be developing an Open Manchester version in the near future; there is plenty however on other parts of the country. You can purchase a copy of the guide next time you are in our office for just £9.99. Half the proceeds go to Shopmobility Stockport funds, so you can help us raise funds at the same time. Open Britain can also be accessed online at www.openbritain.net THE MOBILITY ROADSHOW The original, biggest and best possible showcase of mobility and lifestyle products and services anywhere in the UK with its free entry makes for a fun day out. This year it is being held on 1st, 2nd & 3rd July at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. PE2 6XE, and 17th & 18th September at the Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh. COVENTRY TRANSPORT MUSEUM Coventry transport museum have an exhibition of Transport for the Disabled Past, Present and Future being held until 4th July. It covers the history of disabled transport from the last century to the present day. For the first time in the history of British museums, a collection of vehicles designed for the disabled will be brought together under one roof. The Museum will be staging this exhibition in consultation with `Mobilise`, a charity promoting mobility for disabled people. Gary Hall, Chief Executive, Coventry Transport Museum, said: "The exhibition not only displays disabled vehicles but also examines attitudes and prejudices of people towards disability. I look forward to people`s reaction to this rare display that portrays the history of an important area of road transport and its development." For further information about the exhibition, email enquiries@transport-museum.com or call 024 7623 4270. WHERE TO GO IN STOCKPORT FOR GOOD ACCESSIBLE SERVICE Can you recommend anywhere in Stockport which is good for disabled customers? Perhaps you have encountered staff who show clear evidence that they have had disability awareness training, or you can recommend somewhere that is accessible for customers using scooters or wheelchairs. Shopmobility Stockport is putting together a guide based on members` suggestions. The first edition is available from our office just ask a member of staff, it is free to our members. To make the second edition even better we need input from you the members. Just give your recommendations to any member of staff. We are not looking for product recommendations that is not our role but anything that will help disabled people enjoy visiting Stockport. ANNUAL GENERAL & LOCAL KNOWLEDGE QUIZ The days are getting longer and here at Shopmobility Stockport the staff and volunteers are working on more fiendishly difficult questions to tax those determined quiz entrants who have a go at our annual general and local knowledge quiz to raise money for Shopmobility Stockport. We are always looking for new volunteer fundraisers. If you enjoy meeting and talking to the public you could join our team this summer selling the quiz at venues around Stockport. Last year our quiz made a record-breaking £2,000, so we have quite a target to beat this year. Trustee Eileen Henshaw remains our top salesperson, but she is always ready to take on a fresh challenger. As members of the Fundraising Standards Board (FRSB) we are obliged to conduct our fundraising in a professional manner in order to inspire confidence in the public. Therefore you will need to have a short induction. If you are interested please let a member of staff know.
