Government Launches Review of Mobility Scooter and Powered Wheelchair Laws
The Government has launched a consultation to review and update the laws that cover mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs.
Much of the current legislation dates back nearly 40 years and doesn’t always reflect how these vehicles are used today or the environments in which people rely on them every day.
The review is looking at a range of issues, including where scooters and powerchairs can be used, whether current rules still make sense, and how the law can better support safe and confident use in public spaces.
This is an important development for mobility scooter and powered wheelchair users, including ShopMobility UK and its network of independent centres, who see firsthand how vital these vehicles are for helping people stay mobile, independent, and connected to their communities.
It’s also a real opportunity for individuals to share practical, real-world experience and help shape future legislation in a way that works for both users and the places they visit.
We encourage all ShopMobility centres, mobility scooter users, and powered wheelchair users to participate in the review by completing the questionnaire here.
