West Norfolk Community Transport (WNCT) began their ShopMobility scheme in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, in 1999. The team initially operated from a mobile unit located in the town centre, twice a week, which provided four mobility scooters for hire. In 2005 a new multi-storey car park was completed which resulted in the local council offering them space for a permanent centre. This was the catalyst for service expansion and this accessible location remains an effective and popular facility to this day.

As the scheme is run by WNCT, they are able to join up their Dial-a-Bus Service and ShopMobility scheme – so customers have seamless transfers from front door to town. Users can be collected from their homes and dropped off at the ShopMobility centre, ready to get straight onboard a scooter. The centre staff co-ordinate the Dial-a-Bus, ShopMobility and volunteer car schemes so every customer has access to the most suitable assisted transport for their needs.

Today this successful ShopMobility scheme has 15 scooters available for hire – all of varying sizes and specification. These reliable and comfortable scooters ensure individuals with a variety of mobility challenges can enjoy independence and peace of mind around King’s Lynn.
